Description Ecouges canyon part 2

Below Rencurel and near Pont-en-Royans, the Ecouges Canyon is a landmark for canyoning in the Vercors.

Nature and adrenaline enthusiasts are always captivated by the challenges the canyon offers, including its impressive abseils, bold jumps, and natural slides. It has become a must-visit destination for canyoning enthusiasts in France and Europe. A truly iconic route in the Vercors.

The Lower Section of the Ecouges, also known as "Part 2 of the Ecouges" or "Ecouges 2", is a perfect introduction to sporty canyoning in the Isère region.

This canyon near Lyon is only 30 minutes from Grenoble and Valence. It features several beautiful abseils (up to 28m), exciting jumps (never mandatory), and natural slides.

It’s a fantastic half-day activity (about 3 hours and 30 minutes) in a remarkably sculpted canyon with stunning waterfalls and pools, ideal for jumps and slides – a perfect choice for bachelor and bachelorette parties (EVG and EVJF).

For the more adventurous, you can start with the Upper Section of the Ecouges and complete the full Ecouges descent.

Several versions of the Lower Section of the Ecouges are available:

  • A start with two large waterfalls, the highest reaching nearly 28m, ending after the Diaclase obstacle.
  • For those who prefer a longer aquatic section and wish to skip the abseils, it is possible to bypass the first two waterfalls and finish with a 10m jump (optional) into the "Gourd du Fond."
  • For the most athletic participants, the sequence of the two waterfalls followed by the 10m jump at the "Gourd du Fond" is the most complete and sporty version of the Lower Ecouges Canyon.

It is also possible to combine the Ecouges Canyon with the nearby Versoud Canyon, as the two are complementary and very close to each other.

Proximity to major cities:

  • Grenoble: Approximately 30 minutes by car.
  • Lyon: Approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes by car.
  • Valence: Approximately 1 hour by car.

The last jump in the Gourd bottom is 10m, but it is reserved for those who are comfortable in doing the jump and who have already had experience in canyoning.

  • If you finish further at the Gourd bottom, you will return to the car park by a car shuttle (so no need to walk back)

Difficulty: The lower part of Ecouges, also known as "Ecouges 2", is more accessible and better suited for beginners or mixed groups of different levels. The upper part of the Ecouges canyon is known to be technical and demanding, requiring good physical condition and previous experience in canyoning.

Canyon Walls: Although still steep-walled, the lower part is more open and less narrow than the upper part. The upper part is characterized by a narrow and deep canyon, offering a series of impressive waterfalls and dizzying rappels.

Rappels: There are several rappels, with the highest reaching 28 meters. These rappels are generally less technical than those in the upper part.

Jumps and Slides: The lower part is particularly appreciated for its numerous natural jumps and slides, providing thrills and fun at every step. While the upper part includes some jumps and slides, they are less frequent than in the lower part.

With a balanced combination of rappels, jumps, and slides, the lower part offers a diverse and playful experience. The "part 1" is reserved for more seasoned adventurers seeking technical challenges and a wild environment.
